Granite City's "Gold Crown" October 6,7,8; Abreu Dominates "4-Crown" Midgets

Only 30 points separate the top four drivers in USAC’s National Midget Championship standings, setting up what promises to be a real shootout for the crown in the remaining 2016 races.

First up is the “Gold Crown Midget Nationals” at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill. October 6-7-8 which could decide the championship fate of Spencer Bayston, Chad Boat, Brady Bacon and Tanner Thorson.

Tanner Thorson appears to be the odds-on favorite to repeat as “Gold Crown” champion after capturing both legs of last year’s program. He is fourth in the points, 30 back of teammate Spencer Bayston, only eight behind Chad Boat and just three back of Brady Bacon.

Only the three-night “Gold Crown,” plus the October 20 “Jason Leffler Memorial” at Wayne City, Ill. and the November 24 “Turkey Night Grand Prix” at Ventura, Calif. remain on the calendar.

Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian driver Rico Abreu completely dominated Saturday’s 35th Annual “4-Crown Nationals” at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. After racing in New Hampshire Saturday and jetting to Eldora via Tony Stewart’s plane, he proceeded to post the ProSource fast qualifying time, then caught Chad Boat on lap two and virtually ran away from the field en route to the 25-lap victory in the DC Solar/Abreu Vineyards Speedway/Bullet Toyota.

Thorson was second at the checkered flag, ahead of Bacon, Boat and Holly Shelton.

Kunz/Curb-Agajanian teammate Carson Macedo claimed the KSE Racing Products/Larry Rice High Performance Hard Charger Award for coming from 23rd starting spot to seventh.
