EL PASO, Texas (September 20, 2016) With the forecast altering plans for John Carney II, the Texas shoe found himself at the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas this past weekend with a runner-up finish to show for his efforts.
“We looked Friday around Noon and the forecast still said there was a 60% chance of rain in Little Rock so we decided not to drive 10 hours with that high of a chance of getting rained out,” explained John of the decision to remain closer to home.
Jumping from the Lubbock Wrecker No. 11x to the Coyote Candle Co. No. 74b, Heat Race competition yielded a run from eight to fourth despite the track still being narrow.
“The track was still greasy. Throwing mud heavy but I was able to finish fourth and that put me starting ninth in the A-Main”
Working the setup to keep the car free through the corners, Carney would have to let the chances to pass come to him.
“It was still greasy around the top, and tacky on the bottom so everyone was a little too tight. I would wait for them to push and pass on exit. That got me to second and I was on the leader’s bumper just about coming to the checkered. It was only a 20 lap main so we just ran out of time.”
Slated to return to the Lubbock Wrecker / Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 11x this week, Carney will be in competition at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. for the sixth annual Hockett/McMillin Memorial. In John’s last appearance at the Lucas Oil Speedway for the 2016 ASCS Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek Finale, the result was a eight place finish in the John James Racing No. 4j.
“The facility is second to none. It’s everything a racer could dream of. We ran there a few months ago and it was around the top but that opens the door from some big sliders. I had a blast and am looking forward to going back.”
