Inside Line Promotions – CALHAN, Colo. (Sept. 16, 2016) – Even though he is a teenager, Zac Taylor has shown the racing maturity of a seasoned veteran.
Last Saturday, Taylor studied the track conditions at El Paso County Raceway and used it to his advantage as he claimed his sixth sprint car win of 2016.
“I had a lot of guys asking what I thought the track was going to do,” he said. “I didn’t want to tip my hand so I didn’t say much. I could tell the top wasn’t going to stick and when they dropped the green everyone went to the top and I went to the bottom and was second out of turn two. Then I just drove into the lead and made sure I hit my marks.
“It’s funny, a couple of weeks ago at El Paso it was sort of the same thing only in reverse. Everyone went to the bottom and I went to the top and it worked.”
Taylor had opened the night by placing second in his heat race before lining up on the inside of the third row for the main event. His strong performance in the feature spring boarded him into a midget race on Wednesday at El Paso County Raceway as the Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association was the undercard at the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event.
Taylor and car owner Todd Henry endured trouble in a heat race so the team lined up 21st for the main event.
“They watered the track right before we went out for our heat and didn’t let us roll it in,” Taylor said. “I slid right off the top of turn three and bent the Jacob’s Ladder. We started 21st in the feature and I was up to 13th when a caution came out and they put two cars back in front of me. I got around them and just worked my way forward. We had a great car.”
Taylor maneuvered to a ninth-place result, which was his 23rd top 10 of the season.
“I got to talk to Donny Schatz a little after the races and asked what I needed to do to get to where he’s at,” he said. “He told me marketing and to keep doing what I’m doing. That was really encouraging.”
Taylor will be back behind the wheel of the Todd Henry midget this Saturday at I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan, Colo., for championship night. He is currently second in the RMMRA points. Taylor is fifth in the Colorado Alliance Racing Tour – Blood Sweat and Tears Racing Series standings.
