Inside Line Promotions – BILLINGS, Mont. (Sept. 13, 2016) – Trey Starks had a stout car during the NSA Shootout’s Dan Laber Memorial last weekend at Billings Motorsports Park.

Starks scored a pair of top-five finishes at the 3/8-mile oval, where he drove for Doug Rutz, to give him 15 top fives this season.

The action began on Friday with Starks qualifying fourth quickest. He then advanced a position to place fourth in a heat race, which locked him into the feature redraw. Starks pulled the No. 5 to start the main event on the inside of the third row.

“We got up to second and then the tires started going away,” he said. “About midway through the race we were just hanging on. I fell to fifth and was able to maintain that spot.”

Starks salvaged a fifth-place result to give the team momentum entering the $7,500-to-win finale on Saturday. He kicked off the competition by qualifying 15th quickest before maneuvering from fifth to third place in a heat race. That lined him up 10th for the 29-lap main event.

“I knew we had to get what we could early,” he said. “I was really aggressive on the start and it paid off.”

Starks quickly charged into the top five within the first couple of laps before the track took rubber. He picked up another position late and ended with a fourth-place finish.

Last week’s competition began on Wednesday at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore., where Starks drove his family owned sprint car during the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series show. He timed in 16th quickest in qualifying before placing seventh in a heat race and 11th in the qualifier.

“We got behind the eight ball in qualifying and just were unable to overcome it,” he said. “It’s tough to run up front with those guys if you don’t qualify up front.”

Starks recorded a 14th-place result in the main event.
