Michael Faccinto worked his way around Tanner Thorson with just three laps remaining to win Sunday night’s “Louie Vermiel Classic” USAC Western States Midget feature at Calistoga Speedway.
Faccinto, of Hanford, California, started on the outside of the front row and eventually worked his way to the lead around pole sitter Ronnie Gardner on the sixth lap. Thorson, Saturday night’s “Vermiel” winner, grabbed the lead on lap 13 as Faccinto fell back to second.
A late caution bunched the field up and Faccinto took advantage, slipping past Thorson for the top spot on lap 28.
Thorson made one last-ditch effort into turn three on the final lap to no avail as Faccinto kept his foot it in and powered away to take the checkered flag as Bacon snuck by Thorson for second on the bottom. Thorson took third in front of Gardner and Carson Macedo.
Faccinto took the MF Motorsports OZV/Lucas Oil Spike/Chevy to victory lane for the second time in the series this season and remains second in the standings, 42 behind Gardner, heading into next Thursday’s “Gold Cup Race of Champions” (co-sanctioned by BCRA) at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California.
