Inside Line Promotions – LAKE STEVENS, Wash. (Aug. 29, 2016) – This weekend marks almost five months since Austen Wheatley has raced his sprint car.

That streak is slated to end when he tackles a trio of World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series races in his home state. Wheatley is set to compete this Friday and Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., and Monday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash.

“I’m pretty confident I’ll pick up where I left off,” he said. “We’ve had time off and came back strong in the past so that’s the plan this weekend.”

Wheatley has earned five top 20s during his career at Skagit Speedway in World of Outlaws competition, including a career-best 13th-place result last season. His previous best result was 16th in 2013 and 2011.

“I’m really excited to get to Skagit with the new surface,” he said. “I haven’t got to race on it since they changed it. The goal is to get two top 10s to get back at it on a strong note.”

Wheatley also set a career-best World of Outlaws result at Grays Harbor Raceway last season when he placed 11th. It marked the third straight season of improvement at the 3/8-mile oval, where he finished 14th in 2014 and 24th in 2013.

“Everyone is so equal it’s hard to pass,” he said. “You have to be a lot better. Everyone is so consistent. If we want to get a top 10 we have to qualify well to start toward the front of the feature.”
