Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 16, 2016) – Trey Starks was on pace for a career-best performance last weekend during the 56th annual 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway.
“It’s a pretty tricky place,” he said. “I think getting more and more laps has helped. We found some good stuff we can work with on the car and we know what to go to the next time we head there. We’re finally starting to figure this place out.”
Starks piloted the Jeff McCall sprint car into the marquee event by qualifying 27th quickest during preliminary competition last Thursday. Starks then finished eighth in a heat race before advancing from 17th to 11th in the B Main.
He returned to the half-mile oval on Friday for a second opportunity and the results showed improvement. Starks timed in 15th quickest in his group during qualifying before he ended fifth in a heat race and third in a B Main to garner a transfer into the main event.
“It was probably the best I felt around there,” he said. “The car had a lot of speed and I felt really smooth and consistent. We could finally put some laps together.”
Starks picked up a handful of positions in the main event before a flat tire late in the race spun him around in turns three and four. A fellow competitor was unable to avoid Starks and made contact, which ended the race early for both drivers. Starks was credited with a 24th-place finish.
That lined him up on the inside of the fifth row for the C Main on Saturday. Starks was battling for a top 10 throughout the race before a broken part sent him to the pits early with a 20th-place result, which was four positions shy from his career-best result at the event.
“The best part about the weekend is that we definitely had some car speed and we put some laps and races together,” he said. “That’s something to hold your head high about.”
Starks will return to action this Friday and Saturday at Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, Mont., where he will drive for Doug Rutz during the ASCS Frontier Region doubleheader.
