Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 15, 2016) – Chase Johnson is pleased following his first career Knoxville Nationals.
Johnson gained valuable laps while driving for Shawn and Cyndi Thomas during the 56th annual 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway last weekend.
“I think we did really well,” he said. “We were shooting to make it into the C Main, but you can’t have too many expectations walking in here with me not having any laps in a 410 here as well as Shawn and Cyndi not having any laps here. I think we did well. It’s just a crazy experience. It’s really cool being a part of this event.”
The action began on Wednesday with Johnson qualifying 29th quickest. He then placed seventh in a heat race, which relegated him toward the back of the B Main. Johnson ended 18th in the consolation race.
Results were similar on Friday when he timed in 27th quickest in his group, scored a seventh-place result in a heat race and finished 18th in a B Main.
That lined the team up on the outside of the ninth row in the D Main on Saturday.
“We fine tuned and fine tuned and fine tuned,” he said. “I think we found a really good spot, but we were behind the eight ball because of how important qualifying is here. A little tick off here is big because everyone is so good and the competition is so close.”
Johnson gained a few positions in the D Main to close the trip with a 14th-place result.
“It’s just a completely different world out here,” he said. “It’s really cool to be a part of this event and I look forward to coming back. I want to thank Shawn and Cyndi for the opportunity and the crew for their hard work.”
Johnson will return to action with the Thomas Family on Aug. 27 at Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma, Calif., with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series.
