Inside Line Promotions – OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Aug. 9, 2016) – Big Game Motorsports driver Danny Lasoski is all about the Knoxville Nationals.
It’s the event he focuses on year-round. He dreams about it. He talks about it. Most likely, if a restaurant had an item on its menu called ‘The Knoxville Nationals’ Lasoski would order it.
The preparation for the past year comes to fruition this week as Lasoski and the Muddy sponsored team tackle the $150,000-to-win 56th annual 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, this Wednesday through Saturday.
“I don’t want to be overexcited or overconfident, but we 100 percent think we can win this race,” he said. “I know luck and circumstances play into it. At the end of the day we have a great race team and the guys who work on it do a phenomenal job and I’m the lucky one who gets to drive it.”
Lasoski has earned four Knoxville Nationals titles (1998, 2001, 2003 and 2004) and last year he advanced into his 25th career A Main at the sport’s premier event. During those 25 starts he has 15 top fives and 18 top 10s.
The Muddy backed team is coming off a doubleheader last weekend, which began on Sunday at Knoxville Raceway during the Capitani Classic. Lasoski qualified ninth quickest in his group and won a heat race to start the main event on the outside of the fifth row.
He advanced into fifth place by the midpoint of the race before a car spun in front of him in turn one on Lap 17. Lasoski had nowhere to go and he crashed into the stalled car.
“It junked the race car,” said Lasoski, who was unable to finish the race and was credited with an 18th-place finish. “That was our Nationals car and our Nationals engine. Those are out of play. In all honesty all our cars and engines run good.”
The team used a spare car to compete in the 21st annual Price Chopper Front Row Challenge on Monday at Southern Iowa Speedway. Lasoski timed in sixth quickest during the National Sprint League event before he placed fourth in a heat race to make the King of the Hill race. He won the quarterfinal round to start the main event on the inside of the second row.
“We were running third and the driver made a mistake and got passed by two cars and then the track took rubber,” he said.
Lasoski spent most of the race in third place before losing two spots on a restart. He ended fifth, which increased his lead in the NSL championship standings to 82 points.
