The POWRi/Illini D2 Midget Series again had the crowd on the edge of their seats Saturday night at the fast little oval Sycamore Speedway in northern Illinois. Early in the feature, Aaron Schuck and Jeff Zelinski grabbed the first two positions with Tyler Vantoll and Patrick Bruns chasing them down.
With only a couple laps into the feature the yellow came out as Vantoll and Bruns tangled in turn four. The incident collected Vantoll, Ryan Probst and Jack Rouston and they were unable to restart. After action resumed, Schuck and his Set Racing teammate Zelinski were battling into the closing laps. Patrick Bruns, running hard on the cushion, was looking for some grip to catch the Set Racing stable mates.
As the white flag was coming out, it looked like Schuck would be returning to the Sycamore victory lane but a spin in turn two brought out the yellow setting up the most exciting green-white-checkered finish of the year. When the green flag dropped Schuck defended the bottom of the track and Bruns went for the cushion. Side by side in the closing laps were Schuck and Bruns.
Schuck, having a slight lead most of the way around and through turn four, was then beaten by only inches at the line by a flying cushion-hugging Patrick Bruns. He used the high side to perfection to win in his MWR Ecotec-powered Boss Chassis Mobil 1Triple T Car Wash and Lube sponsored 10B midget.
This was Patrick Bruns tenth Division II feature win of the 2016 season.
