Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (July 27, 2016) – Chase Johnson opened the Peter Murphy Classic last Friday at Thunderbowl Raceway with a strong performance.

Johnson, who was driving for Shawn and Cyndi Thomas during the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series event, qualified 13th quickest to start the action.

“We weren’t that far off, but were a tick off from where we normally qualify,” Johnson said. “We had a really tough heat race. We literally had the top five in points in our heat race. We survived the heat race to transfer into the A Main.”

Johnson finished fifth in the heat race to lock into the 12th starting position for the main event.

“The car was really strong and really fast,” he said. “We didn’t get moving forward too early. We got stuck behind a couple of guys so we weren’t able to make an early move forward. At the end of the race there were some yellows, which allowed us to catch back up to the field and we took advantage of that.”

Johnson made a couple of late passes to post a sixth-place finish, which was his 13th top 10 of the season.

“We were one spot shy of locking it into Saturday night’s pole shuffle,” he said. “All in all we showed we were fast and a contender. On top of that we posted the fastest lap of the A Main.”

Unfortunately, a mechanical gremlin plagued the team on Saturday.

“We pushed off for mud packing like normal,” he said. “It fired and then shut itself off. We pulled it back to the pit area and tried to find what was wrong. We threw a couple of changes at it, but it was getting worse and worse. We never made a lap the entire night. We ended up calling it a night because we couldn’t find the problem.”

Johnson said the team will take this weekend off before making its debut at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, on Aug. 7 for the Capitani Classic.
