Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (July 26, 2016) – The past weekend was another learning experience for Ryan Smith and the Warko team.
Not only was the team working with a new chassis, but the track conditions at Williams Grove Speedway were like nothing Smith has ever experienced at the legendary track. Throw in the doubleheader weekend was sanctioned by the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series and it’s a lot of pressure.
“You would think with the heat and humidity the track would get slippery and wide,” Smith said. “But they watered the hell out of it and on Friday it was pretty much one groove with a big curb. It got better on Saturday, but there really wasn’t a bottom groove all weekend. It was unlike anything I’ve ever seen at that track.”
On Friday Smith failed to make the feature event after qualifying 15th quickest in his group, placing 10th in a heat race and ending eighth in the Last Chance Showdown. Saturday provided better results with Smith transferring out of the Last Chance Showdown to make the Summer Nationals A Main.
“I didn’t qualify well all weekend and that is everything when you race against the Outlaws,” he said. “We also had a new Triple X car and we were behind a little on getting the handle on it. We made huge gains from Friday to Saturday.”
Smith, who qualified 11th quickest in his group before finishing sixth in a heat race and fourth in the consolation race, ended 24th in the main event.
He is slated to compete at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa., on Tuesday as part of the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series.
“It looks like we will take the upcoming weekend off,” he said. “We’re looking at going to our first Knoxville Nationals. I’m excited to try that. We are getting a motor back at just the right time for that. It’s not a done deal, but we’re really close.”
