Inside Line Promotions – ROSSBURG, Ohio (July 18, 2016) – Trey Starks showed flashes of brilliance last weekend during the 33rd annual Kings Royal.

Starks, who was driving for Jeff McCall during the marquee World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series tripleheader at Eldora Speedway, overcame a sour night during the opening round last Thursday.

Starks timed in 16th quickest in his group before placing ninth in a heat race and 11th in the Last Chance Showdown.

“We struggled on Thursday a little bit,” he said. “We didn’t have a very good qualifying lap and that put us behind all night. We went out late and didn’t get a great lap down. The rest of the night we had some mechanical issues. We weren’t very good on restarts because the motor was stumbling. We got it fixed on Friday though. Friday and Saturday were real, real good, especially for us only being there a couple of times.”

Friday began with Starks qualifying third quickest in his group. He then garnered a second-place result in the heat race to make the dash.

“We qualified a lot better,” he said. “In the heat races the inside wasn’t getting good starts so I knew I needed to salvage a second-place finish in the heat to get in the dash. Unfortunately, they drew a zero in the dash draw so we started in the back. Since they had twin dashes I knew spots were really, really important because it was a whole row gained per position. We did really good.”

Starks maneuvered from sixth to third place in the dash to start the main event on the outside of the third row.

“I ran a really good first 10 laps,” he said. “We ran inside the top five. Then the car started to go away. I couldn’t find what everyone else was finding toward the end of the race and we started falling back. All in all, it was a really good improvement though.”

Starks held on for an 11th-place result, which was his career-best finish at Eldora Speedway.

The event concluded on Saturday with the $50,000-to-win finale, which Starks opened by qualifying sixth quickest out of nearly 60 competitors.

“With the format there and being really good in qualifying it puts you back in the heat,” he said. “It’s tough to pass even two good cars to get in the main. Everyone is good and right on. We ended up finishing fifth, which put us in the B Main.”

Starks finished where he started – fifth – in the heat race, which relegated him to the B Main.

“We had a really good start in the B Main,” he said. “We were up to eighth by the first corner. A lap or two in we had an oil filter gasket blow, which ended our night. That was a bummer.”

Starks was unable to finish the race.

He and McCall are slated to return to action this Friday and Saturday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., for the Summer Nationals and Morgan Cup with the World of Outlaws.
