EL PASO, Texas (July 6, 2016) With a brand new ride courtesy of Scott Brown and Lubbock Wrecker Service, John Carney II made his ninth victory of the season the most lucrative yet; picking up $10,000 in the “Boothill Showdown” Steve King Memorial at Dodge City Raceway Park.

Running to a fourth place finish in Friday’s opener, Carney was pleased with the way the new car handled.

“Friday we drew the pole of the Heat so we had to win that but that wasn’t enough to get us in the redraw so we started seventh. We fell back a few spots on the start. There was a little grease on the bottom of the track that got us out of whack but we picked those off and got up to fourth and we were all over third on the last couple laps. The car felt really good,” said Carney of his Friday night prelim run.

Running double duty with 305cid competition in the Stewards No. 224, Carney’s night was cut short following a solid run in the Heat Race due to an issue in the rear end.

Delayed to Sunday for the finale, the field saw a completely new show with Carney winning his NCRA Heat Race. With the track going to rubber in the Qualifier, Carney was only able to advance to fifth which set him up starting sixth in the A-Feature.

Prior to the start of the features, Tommie Estes and crew reworked the track.

Running the night’s 305cid A-Feature prior to the NCRA A-Main, Carney placed third to Jason Martin and Luke Cranston.

“We started last in the Heat and won it and drew the front row but they called us back up the redo it because they were short a pill or something, but anyway, we ended up starting fifth. They ended up working the track before the feature, and we ran third. Just too tight the whole race but overall not bad.”

With the track widened out and ready for the night’s finale, Carney was quick to get close to the front of the field.

“We got a good start and got to third. A few cautions here and there set us up nice. I could just see Loyet and he was running the top on one end, and kind of the middle at the other and I was making ground. I could see him spinning his tires off of four so I changed my line and ran the top on both ends. I had a run at one point, but I knew if I showed him what I was doing, he’d go to block so I waited,” said Carney as he played the role of hunter on the Loyet Motorsports No. 05.

“I tried to pass him low in one a two and made him think I was going to run low in three and four so when he peeled off, I just ran the top of three and four to setup for the slide job in one and two. After that I never looked back but it was a nail bitter for sure. I was just wide open around the top once I got by him. We ended up having a red with about four to go, and they pulled the lapped cars out since we were under five to go. I figured he was going bonsai me on the restart, but I hit it just right.”

Returning to the cockpit of the John James owned No. 4j this coming weekend, Carney is tentatively running two of the three night’s on tap for the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Red River Region. The plan as of now is to run Friday night at Outlaw Motor Speedway, and Saturday and Lawton Speedway.
