Inside Line Promotions – COLUMBUS, Ohio (July 4, 2016) – Kevin Mingus had his best racing weekend of the season this past Friday and Saturday.
Mingus raced his way into the A Main through his heat race in a 305ci sprint car on the dirt at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, on Friday and he finished second in the late model feature on asphalt at Columbus Motor Speedway on Saturday.
“This was by far my best weekend,” he said. “I knew we’ve been getting close and this weekend proved all the hard work my guys have been doing hasn’t been for naught.”
On Friday Mingus drove from eighth to third place in his heat at Attica Raceway Park, making him eligible for the redraw for a starting spot in the feature. He drew an eight and was holding his own through the first part of the feature before suffering a flat left rear tire and limping home to a 16th-place finish.
“I was staying right with the lead pack until about Lap 6 and I felt a big ‘boom’ and the left rear tire started going flat,” he said. “We had an issue with the bead lock. I ran the rest of the race on the rim. But again I’m encouraged. We raced hard in the heat and we’re making giant strides on our dirt program.”
All season qualifying has been the Achilles Heal for Mingus at Columbus Motor Speedway. On Saturday he qualified eighth – his best effort of the year – which put him on the pole for the feature following the eight-car feature inversion.
Mingus led many laps, but a restart was his undoing and he settled for a runner-up finish.
“It was a mistake on my part that probably cost us a win,” he said. “We had a restart and I got on it too late and got beat by a veteran. While it was our best finish of the year, it was bittersweet. I know exactly what I did wrong and I’ll learn from it. Best part is it was a great points night and we should be in the top five at Columbus and sixth or seventh in the NASCAR state points.”
This coming weekend will find Mingus back behind the wheel of his dirt 305 sprint car on Friday at Attica Raceway Park and in the late model on Saturday at Columbus Motor Speedway.
“I have a lot of confidence right now and both race teams have a lot of momentum and we will work hard to continue that trend,” Mingus said.
