Last Lap Tangle In Traffic Steals Victory From John Carney II

EL PASO, Texas (June 30, 2016) So close, yet so far, John Carney II saw his ninth victory of the 2016 season slip through his fingers at the Lone Star Speedway after contact with a lapped car sent the No. 4j spinning while battling with Dustin Gates for the lead with the Sprint Car Bandits.

While the series is billed as a 360cid series, several cars were powered by 305cid engines and were allowed to run on the high-banked three-eighths mile oval, which was the case of the car that Carney made contact with.

“We were very quick in Hot Laps, and fast in the Heat. We ran from fifth to second so that put us high point and started us on the pole. In the feature, we had a good race going with Dustin Gates. I slide him two of three times, and he’d slide me back and when we came up on the lapped cars coming to the white flag lap, he got bottled up and I was far enough back, I couldn’t see what line the lapped car was running. I cleared Gates, but I ended up misjudging the the lapper. He was out of my sight, and by the time he reappeared, we already made contact,” commented John of the slide that ended his run at the win.

With only a few cars on track of the dozen that made the trip, John was able to come back to sixth before the checkered flag fell.

“It was a racing deal. Neither of us were going for a dirty move.”

Looking of the coming weekend, Carney will head to Dodge City Raceway Park for the “Boothill Showdown” Steve King Memorial. The NCRA sanctioned event will feature a $10,000 to win finale on Saturday night. Racing is set for both Friday and Saturday night with races getting underway at 7:30 P.M. (CDT) both nights.

Fitting for the debut of a returning team, the No. 11x will be back in action as John Carney II has teamed up with Scott Brown of Lubbock Wrecker Service to bring the number out of retirement. The number was carried for many years by Dodge City’s, Garry Lee Maier. John will also be pulling double-duty as the URSS 305cid Sprint Cars will be in action. The Steward Builders No. 224 will be the car of choice.

If all goes well, the plan is to head to the Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday for more 305cid competition.
