Brady Bacon – Turning up the Heat on the Plains!
(Bill W) June 27, 2016 – As the weekend got hotter and hotter, Brady Bacon and the Hoffman Racing/Dynamics, Inc. #69 team just stayed that way! The team picked up a win in USAC National Sprint Car Series action at the newly remodeled Jackson Motorplex in Minnesota Thursday before registering runner-up finishes at Eagle Raceway in Nebraska Friday and at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas both Saturday and Sunday. The run helped the team widen their gap on the rest of the pack in the USAC standings. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver has three races on the agenda this week. Friday, the USAC sprints visit Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Indiana. Brady will compete in his own #99 Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa on their second night of NSL action. Sunday, he will return to Indiana and Tri-State Speedway near Haubstadt, where they host the MOWA and MSCS series.
This was Brady’s first trip to Jackson since the renovations. “It’s a super-nice facility,” he says. “The grandstands were great and the track was a lot nicer than the last time I was there. They got it nice and wet for us, which is what we need to put on a show. That gave us a top and a bottom groove. You can’t ask for much more than that.”
He would time in fifth quick. “We got a little tight in qualifying and didn’t get the speed we needed for quick time,” says Brady. “It turned out alright for us at the end of the night, because that put us up front in the feature.”
He earned that right by running second in his heat race. “(Pole-sitter) Dave (Darland) was out front for a while,” says Brady. “We were finally able to make a move on the bottom of turns one and two. There was enough down there to make a move and get by him. We were able to sail until we hit lapped traffic. (Robert) Ballou was able to get beside us a couple of times, but we never made too many mistakes. That was a great win for us.”
It was on to Eagle Friday where Brady would time in seventh quick. “For some reason, we struggle in qualifying at Eagle,” he says. “I don’t know if the track has changed, or if we are taking a different line, but we have struggled lately.”
He would win his heat after starting fourth, and line up seventh for the main event. “The track was a little slicker than it has been in the past,” says Brady. “We ran around the bottom a little bit there early. Some of the cars were getting into each other and crashing all over the place. We were fortunate. We almost got caught in one. We spun and backed into the fence, but we were able to keep the car going.”
Brady would work his way forward to finish second. “We got to second by running the top of three and four,” he says. “We tried the top in one and two a little bit and that didn’t work. Dave Darland got by me, and we moved back down, and we ran the bottom all the way around. We were making some ground on the leaders, and then at the end, someone knocked a tire in turn two out on the track a little bit. That hurt my run down the backstretch into turn three. I didn’t get it figured out until late in the race. We got beside Chad (Boespflug) at the checkers, but it wasn’t enough. He ran the top without making any mistakes. We just weren’t quite able to get him.”
Lakeside hosted two nights of USAC action. Saturday would see Brady time in second quick. “The track was pretty fast in qualifying,” he says. “We were around the top. I thought we were going to be quick time, but Chase (Stockon) was able to get it. We were good in the heat, and won that from sixth.”
He would post from fifth in the feature. “We were able to get to third pretty quickly,” says Brady. “Ballou was out front, and it’s tough to beat him, especially at a track that he’s good at. We were able to get to second and we were running with him. We tried the bottom of three and four a little bit. It was pretty slick though, and there wasn’t enough down there to make up ground. We were able to get beside him on a restart or two, but we didn’t have enough to get by him.”
The track would be fast for Sunday’s finale. “There had been some rain, and it was still a little greasy in one and two,” says Brady. “We still ran a really good lap. It was a track record at the time, but as the track came in, Chase and Thomas (Meseraull) beat us. We ran well in the heat race, going from sixth to second behind Ballou. We actually got lucky, because we cut a tire after that race.”
Brady would start fourth in the final feature of the weekend. “We were able to get to second on the first lap,” he says. “We thought the bottom was going to come in. We got beside Dave and I think we ran side by side for about four laps. We got clear of him and ran the bottom. We pulled away a little bit and got into lapped traffic. I got into a lapped car, and unfortunately, he crashed and brought out a red. There was eight to go at that point, and we sat there a little bit. After the red, we were tight for a couple of laps. The tire got too hot running that low of air after the red. The tire blistered a little, and that enabled Thomas to get by us. I just couldn’t stick it as well as I wanted. I didn’t think he’d get us, but he got a good run off of two. I tried to take a couple shots at him, but it wasn’t enough.”
The second place finish behind T-Mez still has Brady up 59 points on the California shoe heading into Putnamville Friday. “It was a really good points week for us, and financially too,” he says. “It seems with the runs we had, we should be even further ahead, but Meseraull is having a good year too. It’s hard to gain points when everyone is running up front. We’re looking forward to getting to Putnamville on Friday.”
