Inside Line Promotions – JACKSON, Minn. (June 24, 2016) – Daryn Pittman was the man to beat on Friday at Jackson Motorplex, which hosted the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series and the National Sprint League featuring the Spirit Lake Silver & Gold NSL 410 Sprint Cars.
However, a late caution set up a green-white-checkered finish at the recently renovated half-mile oval, where Hard Charger Kerry Madsen made a late-race bid to capture the $10,000-to-win feature.
“They don’t call him ‘Madman’ for nothing,” Pittman said in Victory Lane. “The bottom was just fast. It was my race to give up.”
Pittman hit his marks on the closing two laps to secure the victory with Madsen, who started the 30-lap main event 12th, staying within striking distance until the checkered flag was waved.
“I think that final restart … the opportunity was for the win,” Madsen said. “I really tried hard in (turns) one and two on the very last lap. I just caught the front. I lost a tick of momentum that might have got me over the table. It still would have been close over the line. It was a heck of a run.”
Shane Stewart held off David Gravel for the final spot on the podium.
“Honestly I’m really shocked that we ran third,” Stewart said. “I didn’t feel like we had a third-place car. That’s the good thing about double-file restarts. Sometimes they work for you and sometimes they don’t. Tonight was a great example of them working for us. A podium finish is a podium finish whether it’s ugly or pretty. We’ll take it and move on.”
Craig Dollansky maneuvered from 10th to a fifth-place result, which helped boost his lead in the National Sprint League championship standings to 53 points over seventh-place finisher Danny Lasoski. Dollansky also holds an 11-point advantage over Madsen in the Spirit Lake Silver & Gold NSL 410 Sprint Cars standings at Jackson Motorplex.
Friday night began with Pittman and Gravel tying for quick time during qualifying. Pittman was awarded the official top time based on a tiebreaker.
He went on to win a heat race, along with Gravel, Joey Saldana and Ian Madsen. Pittman captured the dash victory following a zero inversion with Terry McCarl winning the B Main.
Saldana edged Pittman by a nose to lead Lap 1 of the main event, but it was all Pittman during the final 29 laps. Four cautions slowed the pace of the race; second-running Saldana had a right rear tire explode on Lap 11, third-place running Sammy Swindell spun to avoid contact during a close slide job from Jason Johnson on Lap 16, a fuel stop brought out a red flag on Lap 21 and Brad Sweet spun while running ninth with two laps remaining.
Despite the handful of restarts Pittman was able to set the pace out front en route to his fifth World of Outlaws win of the season.
“A lot of it was track position tonight,” Pittman said. “It’s still a matter of going out and getting the job done no matter where you start. It was my job to go out there and put 30 laps together and bring it home in Victory Lane.”
Liquid Nitro IMCA 305 Sprint Cars
Kaleb Johnson scored his second straight Liquid Nitro IMCA 305 Sprint Cars feature triumph at Jackson Motorplex.
Johnson took the lead from Michael Stien on Lap 2 and he cruised to the victory, which moved Johnson within six points of Bruce Anderson for the lead in the championship standings.
Robby Wolfgang advanced to the runner-up result with Stien rounding out the podium. Anderson placed fourth and Nate Eakin fifth.
Eakin and Wolfgang were the heat race winners.
Jackson Motorplex is scheduled to host action on Saturday featuring the Wilmont Oil IMCA a mods, Bohl’s Small Engine & Marine IMCA sport mods, Minnesota West – Jackson Campus IMCA hobby stocks, Boji Bay Water Park IMCA sport compacts and IMCA stock cars.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors ages 65 and older, $6 for students ages 13 to 18 and free for children ages 12 and younger. Pit passes are $30.
