Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (June 21, 2016) – White Lightning Motorsports pilot Devin Kline scored his fifth top-five finish of the season last Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.
Kline kicked off the event in the 305ci sprint car class by qualifying fourth quickest before he maneuvered from fifth to second place in a heat race. That lined him up on the inside of the second row for the main event at the famed half-mile oval.
“My brakes weren’t working well,” he said. “Christian (Bowman) and Mike (Mayberry) were setting a good pace on the bottom. I don’t normally run the top, but I didn’t really have a choice so we went up top and started reeling them in. We took the lead and we were coming up through traffic pretty good. Then a caution came out with five laps to go. McKenna (Haase) was hooked up on the bottom good and I tried to run the bottom, but I didn’t have the brakes to hold it down there.”
Kline took the lead on Lap 5 and led through Lap 12 before Haase edged him by a nose at the start-finish line on Lap 13.
“I saw her coming and I went to the bottom,” he said. “I think I overdrove the car because of the situation. I didn’t feel like I was making it work so I went back to the top.”
The duo were side by side for the next lap and a half before a caution came out. That gave Hasse clear track and Kline was unable to make another bid for the lead. The second-place finish marked his third consecutive podium result.
Teammate Jamie Ball started the night in the 360ci class just as strong. He timed in third quickest during qualifying and powered from sixth to third place in a heat race. Ball was slated to line up on the outside of the second row for the main event, but a mechanical problem derailed the team before the race started.
“Our night started off with another good qualifying run and we moved forward in the heat race,” he said. “We gave ourselves a good opportunity. I went to push off for the feature and I had a terrible vibration in the rear end. When I got on the gas it shook uncontrollably. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to race. I pulled in to the work area before we got lined up and we weren’t able to figure out the issue in time.”
Both drivers will return to action this Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.
