Bryant Views ASCS Speedweek as a Learning and Fun Experience

Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (June 21, 2016) – Tommy Bryant’s first Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek was “fun, but difficult.”

Bryant and the SawBlade.com sponsored Cooper Motorsports team were very competitive with the ASCS National Tour while running four straight nights on new tracks.

“That was probably the most fun yet most difficult racing I’ve ever experienced in racing,” he said. “We ran against the best 360 sprint drivers in the country. And with the distance between tracks … it was a lot of hard work and I can’t thank my crew guys Austin and Frank enough for all they did.”

The Speedweek began for Bryant at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla., last Wednesday. Bryant placed fifth in a heat race and second in a B Main to transfer into the 20th starting position for the main event. He rallied for an 11th-place result.

On Thursday Bryant traveled to Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla. However, a bad heat race put the SawBlade.com backed team behind all night.

“We were among the fastest cars in hot laps, but felt a little tight in the center of the corners so we made some changes,” he said. “We adjusted ourselves out of the heat. We were just way too loose.”

Bryant dropped from second to fifth place in his heat, relegating him to a B Main, where he finished seventh.

Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo., greeted Bryant and the Cooper Motorsports team on Friday. Bryant placed third in a heat race to make the A Main, where he ended with a 14th-place result.

“That is probably the biggest track I’ve ever been on,” he said. “I didn’t know how to approach our setup and that put us behind. In the feature I started 15th and it was really dusty and it took a few laps to be able to see clearly. On a big track like that when you get behind there’s no catching up.”

Lucas Oil Speedway hosted the final Speedweek night on Saturday. Bryant had a good heat race, driving from sixth to second place. He then ended fourth in a qualifier, which accumulated enough points to get a fifth-place feature starting position.

“Lucas Oil Speedway is now my favorite track,” he said. “It is the best facility I’ve ever seen and the track is very racey. I want to go back in September for the three-day show.”

In the feature Bryant went to the bottom of the track, which is where he had found success in his heat race.

“The bottom was gone,” he said. “I dropped back a few spots until I got to the top and put the wing in the trunk. I got going and was back up to fifth and a car spun in front of me and tried to keep going. I was about halfway past him and he slammed into me and destroyed the rear of the car. I know we had a podium car.

“All and all it was a pretty good week. I have to thank James and Richard Cooper for the incredible opportunity. We had good speed all week.”

Bryant will take five weeks off with the next scheduled races July 22-23 for the 15th annual Summer Nationals with the ASCS Gulf South Region. Bryant will be at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, on July 22 and at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, on July 23.
