Inside Line Promotions – AMARILLO, Texas (June 13, 2016) – Josh Baughman scored his fifth top five of the season last Saturday at Route 66 Motor Speedway during the opening race of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour’s 24th annual Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek.
“I felt like it went good,” he said. “We had a lot of speed. We were really good in the heat. Everyone else was going to the middle and to the top and we stuck the bottom.”
Baughman charged from sixth to win a heat race, which gave him the most points and a spot in the feature redraw. He pulled the No. 3 during the random redraw to line up on the inside of the second row for the main event.
“On the first lap going down the backstretch we were in the lead,” he said. “Wayne (Johnson) slid me going into turn three. We made a couple of mistakes and they got by us. I think we might have missed it in the main, but we still salvaged a top five. We probably needed to be a little more free and I just needed to hit my marks a little better.”
Baughman maintained a top five throughout the feature before ending fifth.
Speedweek competition returns on Tuesday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, before races on Wednesday at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla.; Thursday at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla.; Friday at Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo.; and Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo.
“I feel like there’s no reason why we can’t pull off a win or two,” he said. “We have the speed. To finish first you must first finish. That’s our focus this week.”
Baughman ranks 10th in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship standings.
