CG Motorsports- Glenpool, Ok. (June 9, 2016) Matt Covington traveled north to run with the ASCS National tour this past week along with Knoxville Raceway. Covington’s trip would net results of an 8th place finish at Hartford Speedway, followed by a solid 3rd place finish at Knoxville on Saturday.
Covington began the weekend last Friday at Hartford Speedway after the rainout on Plymouth on Wednesday. Covington would finish 4th in the heat race. That earned him the 12th starting spot in the feature.
In the feature Covington was able to work forward into the top-10 early into the main event. As the race went on Matt tried to drive towards the top-5 but came up short and had to settle for an 8th place finish.
“It was an average night for us on Friday Covington said, “We got behind at Hartford after the heat. Our struggle in the heat and lack of passing points, didn’t give us a great start for the feature. We started 12th in the feature and was decent enough to get up to 8TH. The track was tricky and rough in spots and we missed the car a little bit, but still salvaged a top-10 and solid night."
After Hartford on Friday, Matt and the team loaded up to drove all night to Knoxville due to Brownstown's action being canceled. Luckily the rain stayed away from Knoxville and Matt, and the crew was able to run the famed half mile for one last tune up before the nationals.
Covington was able to start off the night strong with a 6th place qualifying effort, followed by a 3rd place heat race finish.
The combined qualifying and heat race points would line Covington up on the front row for the feature. Matt would lead most of the race running the cushion out front, until a power steering issue late in the race slowed his effort and relegated him back to 3rd at the checkers.
“Saturday was a great night for us,” the stated Matt. “We honestly should have got our first win of the year. We were fast all night. We qualified good and ran good in the heat. That gave us a front row starting spot for the feature. We lead most of the race and was very fast. We were just riding there and clicking off the laps when my power steering started to fad with about 8 laps to go. I was running hard up top on the cushion and when I lost the steering I had to change my line and survive to finish. Knoxville is not somewhere you can run easily without power steering, especially on the cushion. Sucks that we lost that race due to that, but I feel we got a good base setup for Knoxville now when we come back in August. We will take the 3rd place effort and see if we can better that and grab a win this week during Speedweek.”
