World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series announcer Johnny Gibson comes to the 'Sprint Car Capital of the World' this Friday and Saturday, and he will be the special guest at this month's "Sprint Car 101" program at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum. At 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, journalist Bill Wright will spend an hour interviewing the veteran announcer, who was named the recipient of the Thomas J. Schmeh Outstanding Contribution to the Sport Award from the North American Sprint Car Poll in 2012.
Museum executive director Bob Baker said today, "It is hard to believe, but Johnny Gibson started announcing World of Outlaws sprint car races in 1997, the same year that Donny Schatz became a regular on the tour. Through it all, Johnny has developed his own unique style behind the microphone and it is incredibly popular with fans, young and old. And, because he is 'just a fan' as he says, the interesting and informative announcer has remained very accessible. This Saturday afternoon's Sprint Car 101 will be another opportunity for sprint car fans to interact with him."
Prior to the museum's Sprint Car 101, WoO fans at Knoxville Raceway this weekend will be able to take advantage of the track's Fan Fest, from 1 until 3 p.m. on Saturday. The track has lined up music, food, a craft beer bus, a bounce house, and a Sumo-16 wrestling tournament. The WoO-sanctioned, Craftsman-sponsored sprint car races will take place on the legendary half-mile dirt track on both Friday night, June 10, and Saturday night, June 11.
