(Bill W) June 1, 2016 – With plans in Texas falling to Mother Nature, Wayne Johnson and the Two-C Racing team made their way north and west to Double X Speedway near California, Missouri on Sunday. Every Memorial Day weekend, Double X pays tribute to Jesse Hockett. The ASCS Warrior region was in the house again this year. With tonight’s event in Plymouth, Indiana rained out, the ASCS National Series heads to Hartford, Michigan on Friday and Brownstown, Indiana Saturday.
A new EMI chassis was ready for the weekend. “We put our new car together,” says Wayne. “We had planned on running it with three shows in Texas, but rain got in the way there. So we headed to California, Missouri Sunday.”
Wayne would start seventh in his heat. “We were able to get up through there to third,” he says. “It was good to get back there and pay tribute to Jesse. You know he and I had some really good times over the years in racing not only here, but also in Australia. It was good to get back there. Not much has changed since we were there last in 2007.”
He would draw the four to start the feature, and quickly work up to second. “We were able to get to (leader Jonathan) Cornell,” says Wayne. “I was running the bottom, and I was going by those guys right when the caution came out. Under the caution, his crew guys told him where to go. After that, it was just tough to pass him.”
The bottom was the preferred line. “Our car was pretty good,” says Wayne. “Once Jonathan took the bottom of three and four, I could run the top and stay with him. I just couldn’t get by him. We were good. At the end, I got to trying too hard and jumped the curb two or three times. He got away from us there. Of course, he’s really good at that track.”
Wayne is hoping he can get at least two events in this weekend. “It’s been since I ran the Gumout Series that I’ve been to Hartford,” he says. “Brownstown will be a new place for us. Hopefully, we can dodge this rain for once.”
