Taylor Overcomes Adversity to Capture Two Top 10s in Kansas

Inside Line Promotions – WAKEENEY, Kan. (May 31, 2016) – Racing is a family affair. When racing and family issues happen at the same time … well, it can be hectic. Such was the case this past weekend for Zac Taylor.

The 17-year-old not only had to cope with his family moving from Colorado back to Wyoming, but weather forced WaKeeney Speedway to run two complete URSS events in one day on Monday. Then, a blown tire in a heat race caused extensive damage to Taylor’s sprint car in the first event. Despite the issues, Taylor and his team recorded a pair of top-10 finishes.

“It was a hectic week,” he said. “We were in the middle of moving back to Wyoming and trying to race. So there was a lot on all of our minds.”

In the heat race for the first event Taylor’s right rear tire exploded, which damaged the rear end, torque tube and most of the rear end components. Thanks to friends, repairs were made and Taylor stormed from his 17th starting spot to a third-place finish in the main event.

“We were about five laps into the heat the right rear exploded,” he said. “It wrecked everything. A huge thank you to the Kaiser family and Ron Huish for all the help.

“In the feature, about halfway through, a group of cars all bottled up. I was running 12th at the time and passed seven cars. Then I worked my way to third and was challenging for second when the second-place car kept sliding up in front of me. Everyone’s hard work really paid off. It was pretty much a one-lane track so it was a lot of work and luck to get where we finished.”

Taylor had a great car in the second event as well. He rallied from fifth to second place in a heat race, which lined him up on the inside of the third row for the main event.

“In the feature with about four laps to go I slid up too high in turn four and went backwards,” he said. “I finished seventh, but all things considered it was a great night of racing.”

Taylor will return to competition this Saturday at I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan, Colo.
