CG Motorsports- GLENPOOL, OK. (May 26, 2015) Matt Covington had some highs and lows this past weekend with the ASCS Red River Region. Matt unfortunately had a DNF on Friday at Creek County Speedway, but rebounded with a 3rd place finish on Saturday at Lawton Speedway in Oklahoma.
Friday night Matt and the team took on the first race of the Red River Region double header weekend.
After a good draw, Covington was able to win his heat from the 2nd starting position. He made the redraw and unfortunately drew the 8th pill for the A feature.
In the feature, Matt’s shot at a win came up short early into the race. He caught the moisture and bounced the car up, looping it around, and brought out the first caution. After going to the back, Covington drove hard to pass cars with a tight race car. He had managed to claw his way back into the top-10 before his night officially came to an end after catching the cushion once more, laying it over on its side. The top wing was crunched and resulted in his first DNF of the season.
Saturday, Covington and the crew fixed and prepped the car before making a trip to Lawton Speedway for another night of ASCS Regional action.
The draw was not so kind to Matt Saturday night, placing him 8th in the third heat. The heat race provided the night’s first challenge as Covington needed as many passing points as possible and a good finish to move on to the A feature. He gave his best effort to charge to the front, salvaging many points, and concluded with a 3rd place finish.
Matt found himself lining up in 5th starting spot after the redraw.
At the drop of the green, Covington began working toward the leaders inside the top-5. Matt was able to pick off the 4th and 3rd place cars as the laps clicked away in the 25-lap feature. When the laps ran out, Matt came home with the 3rd finishing position and a solid comeback after the misfortunes of the night before.
“This past weekend was a bit frustrating for me due to Friday night,” stated Covington. “We just missed the car and were way too tight in the feature. We loosened the car up a lot but not enough. And every time I tried to pass cars on the top I got way too tight. Saturday was better and a solid rebounding night. We started 5th and the other national guys started in front of me. By the time I got to 3rd we were all running one, two, and three. There just wasn’t much I could do considering the lap traffic. Hopefully this weekend we can find some clear weather and go after it 100% to do our best and get the first win of the season.”
