Inside Line Promotions – WILMOT, Wis. (May 24, 2016) – Caleb Helms registered a pair of 14th-place finishes last weekend with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions.
Helms opened the doubleheader on Friday at Lincoln Speedway in Lincoln, Ill., where he made his debut by qualifying eighth quickest. That ranked second best in his group and lined him up on the inside of the second row for a heat race.
“We were decent in qualifying, but we were a little loose in the heat race,” he said.
Helms placed fourth in the heat race, which lined him up on the outside of the eighth row for the main event.
“Before the feature we made some adjustments and were hoping to be pretty good,” he said. “I was running laps and trying to get in my groove, but the rubber was laying down on Lap 3. Within a couple of laps I started hauling it in higher and harder. I was passing a lot of cars, but a lot of cautions came out that would negate those passes.”
Helms worked his way into the top 10 just after the midpoint of the race.
“I passed Lee Jacobs and was close to Dale Blaney when the yellow came out before we got to the line,” he said. “That put me back behind Lee, who knew where I was running. He took my line and then he bumped into somebody and spun and I couldn’t go anywhere. I had a really good run going, but we had to go to the back for being involved in that crash.”
Helms rebounded from the incident to place 14th.
The weekend concluded on Saturday at Wilmot Raceway, where Helms timed in 17th quickest during qualifying and led a few laps during a heat race before finishing second. That started him 16th in the main event.
“We started out strong and then couldn’t get in a good groove and lost some spots,” he said. “At the end of the race I got a few spots back. I probably had a better car than where I finished.”
Helms scored a 14th-place finish. He now ranks eighth in the All Star championship standings entering races this Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, and Saturday at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio.
