Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (May 16, 2016) – Trey Starks came close to registering his third triumph of the season last Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway, where a flat tire in the closing laps relegated him to an 11th-place result.

“It was a good night overall,” he said. “Everything went right except for that blown tire. That stuff happens. You just have to move on to the next night.”

Starks opened the event by qualifying second quickest. He then advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race, which lined him up on the inside of the third row for the 25-lap main event.

“Come main event time we made all the changes we usually do on the slick tracks,” he said. “From the drop of the green flag we were fast. We got to third before a caution around Lap 5. I think we got the lead on the seventh or eighth lap. I tried to set a good pace and not make any mistakes in traffic. With about 10 laps to go I started to hear a noise from the right side of the car. My first assumption was maybe it was someone behind me.”

Starks continued to set a strong pace out front before a red flag with four laps remaining halted the action.

“We had a red with four laps to go and I could feel a tire going down,” he said. “Sure enough we had a flat right rear. I tried to spin it (during the caution) and build some heat to limp it to the finish, but the tire was way too flat. Shortly after we restarted it ended up shredding. It was a heartbreaker.”

Starks lost two spots on the restart lap before the tire exploded on the frontstretch. He was unable to finish the race and was credited with an 11th-place finish.

“If we didn’t have a caution or if the caution wouldn’t have been a red so we could roll around to keep some heat in the tire or if the red was open we would have been ok,” he said. “That’s just part of racing.”

Starks is heading east this weekend to drive for Jeff McCall on Wednesday at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa., for the Gettysburg Clash and Friday and Saturday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., for the Morgan Cup with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
