Brian Brown - Short Night/Short Weekend!

(Bill W) March 23, 2010 – It was a short night for Brian Brown at the Lucas Oil ASCS National opener at the Devil’s Bowl in Mesquite, Texas. Friday night’s show would be the only race of the weekend with Mother Nature hovering over the Dallas area on Saturday. Brian will weigh his options for racing action the next couple weeks.

Things started well enough in the draw. “We started off the first ASCS National race with a good draw, that’s for sure,” says the Grain Valley, Missouri driver. “I felt like we were one of the fastest cars in hot laps.”

Drawing the pole in the last heat race with 63 cars in attendance is not always a good thing. “Usually starting on the pole of the seventh heat is not the place you want to be because of the passing point system,” says Brian. “The track was narrow, and we had a shot at the redraw if we could win the heat.”

Excitement turned to disappointment as a spark plug wire had been knocked loose prior to the green flag. “As we took the green, I could tell we were down a cylinder, and that was about all she wrote,” says the driver of the FVP #21. “I knew we couldn’t keep up with the loss of horsepower.”

With the track conditions not conducive to moving up from the eighth row in the B to a finish in the top two, Brian and the team elected to cut their losses. “We were so far behind the 8-ball at that point, that there was no sense in making a bad night worse,” he says. “With the caliber of competition there, starting 15th in the B and making the top two was pretty unlikely. Guys like Shane Stewart and Gary Wright didn’t make it out from the second or third row.”

After three weekends in Texas, the team went home knowing they had collected their first win of the year. They are looking at calendars and the Weather Channel to determine their next move. “We were able to get a jump and get home where we hadn’t been for a few weeks,” says Brian. “We’ll look at the weather forecast to decide where we’re going to race next.”

Sloan Davis asks: What are your thoughts on the new engine rules at Knoxville?
Brian answers: I think they are trying to bring back the dash-12 heads that are around, especially down in Farmington and over in Illinois, and make them competitive at Knoxville. I think their plan is to gain five or six more cars. I kind of have mixed emotions. On one hand, I think they’re trying to bring some of the dinosaurs out of the closet, but I think it may open up another can of worms. As smart as the engine builders are…and I’m not one of them…they’re going to figure out how to put out a 440 with 900+ horsepower with the specs they need. It will definitely be interesting to see. I give Knoxville credit for being the first to go out on a limb again, and try something different.

Brown's Bits
Brian’s win at the Battleground Speedway near Highlands, Texas on March 6 marked his earliest win in the States in the calendar year. Last year’s win of the Turkey Classic at Springfield (MO) Speedway came on March 15. He won the Classic ahead of Josh Fisher, Derek Hagar, Toby Brown and Sean McClelland.
