Covington Ready to Take on TMS after a Pair of Top-10s this Past Weekend

CG Motorsports- Glenpool, Ok. (May 12, 2016) Matt Covington wrapped up this past weekend with a pair of top-10s. Covington came home 8th with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour on Thursday at Lakeside Speedway and 7th on Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway.

“It was a challenging weekend,” Covington said. “We had speed both nights, we just missed the car a little on Thursday. And then we found a hole in the oil line after the heat on Saturday, which forced us to start in the back.”

At Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Covington finished 1st in the heat race.
That earned him enough points to be in the redraw where he drew the 6 pill.

From the 6th starting spot, Covington began working towards the top-5. But soon he found that to be a struggle as he dealt with a tight race car. After fighting the car and losing some spots on a couple of restarts, Matt found himself crossing checkers in 8th place.

“I knew we were going to have our work cut out for us after starting 6th,” stated Matt. “We tried a different tire and it bit us. It took too long to fire on restarts and once it did, we were too tight. We learned from it though and hopefully it will pay off down the road. I am just glad we were able to come home with an 8th place finish and not fall back any further.”

After Lakeside on Thursday, Matt and the team had an off-night but chose to travel to Missouri and race at the Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday.

“Saturday was also another crazy night for us,” stated Matt. “We had a good heat and was able to make the redraw again. But after the heat, we found a hole in an oil line and it put us behind the eight ball the rest of the night.”

Covington ran 3rd in his heat race from the back. That ranked him into the nights redraw and lined him up to start inside row 3 for the feature. However, the 6th starting spot was out of reach due to a mandatory engine swap because of a damaged oil line. The motor change regulated Covington back to the 14th starting position.

Matt went to work once the green flag waved. He quickly advanced into the top-10 and was able to jump into the top groove, continuing forward. Matt met some challenges late in the race as he worked into 7th, finding all the top running cars with near equal speed. Matt kept fighting for positions in his A-Rock Materials/Wesmar powered machine, dicing back and forth with Dover and the 6th place car. But when the checkers flew, Matt ultimately had to settle for 7th place.

“The car was good in the feature,” Covington said. “The track was very racy and we had good speed. We had some of the best lap times through the race but, after the oil line issue, we were stuck trying to just salvage a good night. But to start 14th and finish 7th is a solid night for us. I am happy with it and glad to start having speed in the car right now. My goal is just to stay consistent and fight for wins, especially on the nights that we have a good starting spot. Hopefully this weekend at TMS we can contend for the win and have a good couple of nights.”
