Brody Roa leads the USAC/CRA AMSOIL Sprint Car Championship into the May 28 “Salute to Indy” at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway. Roa finished third in last Saturday’s race at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway and emerged with an 18-point lead over Richard Vander Weerd in the standings.
Troy Rutherford of Ojai, Calif. led the final 13 laps to win Saturday night’s Ventura race. Wheeling the AAA Propane Service/Trench Shoring Spike/Shark, Rutherford passed Mike Spencer on lap 18 and led the rest of the way to beat Spencer, Roa, Damion Gardner and Austin Williams. The victory was Rutherford’s first in USAC/CRA competition.
Vander Weerd and Gardner are expected to be among favorites when the series returns to The PAS. Vander Weerd has four wins there in the past two years while Gardner’s record at Perris has been unequalled. Damion won five races there last year and six the year before, giving him a record career total 37 at the half-mile dirt oval.
Mike Spencer, who piloted a Cory Kruseman car at Ventura and led the first 21 laps before finishing second, has 25 career Perris wins.
