It was a battle between more than 100 racers and Mother Nature at Saturday night’s Sixth Annual Mother’s Day Race for the Cure atop Canyon Speedway Park’s 1/3-mile clay oval.
By night’s end, it was a split decision with lightning in the area forcing the cancellation of the final three features after the original three feature events were completed.
Before the weather became too dangerous to proceed, Paul O’Connor and Shon Deskins reeled off second consecutive wins in IMCA Hobby Stocks vs. Renegades and Micro Sprint action, respectively, with Hayden Bender besting the Mod Lites.
Mother Nature stepped in to finish the night with dangerous lightning forcing the cancellation of the Late Model, Arizona Differential IMCA Modified and IMCA Sport Modified feature events. The feature events will not be rescheduled.
In Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive IMCA Hobby Stock vs. Renegade action, Paul O’Connor took advantage of his front row outside starting position to race to his second win in a row in front of 11th starter David Jones with Ashley Stafford, Richard Bennett and 12th starter Joe Vlasity rounding out the top five.
Starting from the pole position, Shon Deskins became the first repeat winner in seven rounds of Power 600 Micro Sprint action by racing to the line ahead of Dustin Cormany, Colton Hardy, Tyler Merrill and Kyle Huttenhow.
In Mod Lite action, Hayden Bender raced from sixth to take the checkered flag ahead of the Priest duo of Brenden and John with Steve Moriarty and Jim Hock rounding out the top five.
Canyon Speedway Park fires back into action with the two-day Fifth Annual Salute to Indy event on May 28 and May 29 featuring the USAC Southwest Sprint Cars along with the NAPA Non-Wing Sprint Cars, Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive IMCA Hobby Stocks vs. Renegades, Power 600 Micro Sprints and Western Mod Lites.
