CG Motorsports – Glenpool, Ok. (April 20, 2016) – Matt Covington took on the Knoxville Raceway and Missouri State Fair Speedway this past weekend.
Covington’s weekend started off at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, on Saturday, where he qualified 12th quickest before advancing from 4th to 3rd place in his heat race. That locked him into the feature in the 12th starting position.
“We had some adversity to overcome at the start of our night,” he said. “We hit a big chunk of mud on the first lap of hot laps and the car started smoking. I pulled off immediately because of the smoke. In the batch qualifying, it started to smoke some more and I got one lap on the clock before pulling off again to protect the car. To qualify 12th with only one full complete lap between hot laps and qualifying was pretty remarkable, I thought.
Covington jumped to the high side from his 12th starting spot and set sail to the front in the feature. Cracking the top-10 by halfway, Covington continued to advance and brought home a 7th place finish, which marked his 9th top-10 of the season.
“I would have like to been able to have more laps for a better qualifying effort. But to salvage a solid finish and have a fast car is very encouraging for when we go back there later in the year,” stated Covington.
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday at Missouri State Fair Speedway, which was hosted by the ASCS Warrior Region.
“We drew a high number and competive heat,” Matt said. “We got up to 4th, which locked us in the feature starting 12th. It was a one-lane race track,” he said. “We were biding our time and working our way to the front. I was coming up through the field and made it up to 8th. I got positioned under a car and, as we drove down into the corner, we got bunched up as everybody fought to protect the bottom. It forced us into the inner guardrail and to the pits, sustaining damage to the car. We were fast and the track was just starting to come to us. I felt like we were definitely fast enough to finish in the top-5 or maybe even in the top-3.”
Covington’s incident relegated him to his first DNF and finish outside the top-10 of the season.
“I felt like we were fast all weekend and continuing to gain speed, “Covington said. “It’s tough to win but we’ve been fast and a lot more consistent this year than we have in a long time. The wins will come as long as we keep up our momentum and stay focused on the big picture. We still have a couple areas I’d like to improve in but are very close to a consistent, winning combination.
Covington is slated to run with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, this Friday and Saturday for the Texas Outlaw Nationals.
