Inside Line Promotions – BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (April 18, 2016) – Chase Johnson ended the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series spring swing throughout the West with his career-best World of Outlaws finish last Friday at Bakersfield Speedway.

Johnson kicked off the night by registering a season-best ninth-place qualifying effort before he ended the event by placing 15th during his debut at the track while driving for Shawn and Cyndi Thomas.

“I’ll definitely take it,” Johnson said. “We started off the night really well or a lot better than what we’ve normally been with the Outlaws. That put us ahead instead of chasing ourselves.”

Unfortunately, bad luck showed up prior to the start of a heat race.

“We were supposed to start third in the heat race,” he said. “On the warm-up laps we had a left rear wheel split in half on us. I’m not too sure why it happened. That caused the left rear to come off the car going into turn three and the back end of the car got into the wall. It was a little more damage than just swapping a left rear tire so we didn’t make the start of the heat race.”

That relegated Johnson to the back of the main event.

“That threw away our time, which was a real bummer,” he said. “I’d have liked to see where we would have stacked up without that problem. In the feature we slowly made our way forward. We were one of the cars that spent all race on the top side. I felt like our car was set up for the top. It was a little too free to putt around the bottom. In the middle of the race I moved down the track a little in one corner. We were able to pick off quite a few people. I think we were up to 12th or 13th with about five laps to go and we were heavy in traffic. I got balled up on the cushion, hopped it and got up on the wall. I saved it, but lost a couple of positions because of it.”

Johnson’s charge from 21st to a 15th-place finish was a strong finish to the World of Outlaws trip to the West.

“All in all it was a good night and I was happy with how we finished the Outlaw swing,” he said.

Johnson will return to competition this Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series.
