OKTAHA, Okla. (April 15, 2016) - Experience and patience goes a long way when it comes to winning races and that was the key for Alex Sewell Friday night at Outlaw Motor Speedway.
Sewell chased Sean McClelland for 19 laps then used lapped traffic to pass McClelland and win his first Ameri-Flex Hose and Accessories OCRS Sprint Car main event.
“The key to getting around Sean was being patient and keeping him in our sights the whole race and not giving up,” Sewell said of his opportunity to take the lead. “People would have just settled and I am sick of settling.
“We followed him the whole race and tried some slide jobs on him. I thought one time or another he might make a mistake and he did.
“I got around him in lapped traffic. That was key.”
Sewell started on the pole next to McClelland but the three-time OCRS champion got the early jump to lead the first lap. Sewell gave chase in his Action Auto Collision number 8 and finally made his move in lapped traffic on lap 20 just before the red flag waved. On the restart Sewell resumed his lead and led the final six laps for the win.
“When you are the leader you don’t necessarily know where to go, but tonight I chose the correct lane and it paid off,” Sewell said.
“My car was working pretty good. I could make the middle work in (turns) 1 and 2 and he could make the top work in 1 and 2. I just had to keep my momentum.”
Sewell has a lot of respect for McClelland and knew passing him was not going to be easy.
“Sean has been doing this for a long time,” Sewell said. “You can learn a lot with a guy like that. I like racing with Sean. He has taught me a lot over the years whether he knows it or not.”
McClelland found himself locked in a duel with defending champion Robert Sellers after losing the lead. The two traded slide jobs in the corners for two laps, but Sellers passed McClelland for the final time on lap 23 and made it stick to finish second. Whit Gastineau followed the pair hoping for a shot but settled for fourth and points runner-up Zach Chappell rounded out the top five.
McClelland felt the lap 20 red flag, which waved for rookie Jason McDougal who crash while running fourth, was the key to losing the lead.
“I lost it on a red flag and never got passed,” said McClelland. “I was suppose to be in the lead.
However McClelland felt Sewell drove a good race and earned the victory.
“Alex raced me clean did a good job,” he said.
“It was my race to lose and I was not going to lose it. We lost it tonight but we will be back and win.”
