April 12, 2016 – (CG Motorsports) Matt Covington and team wouldn’t have to travel far to find a race this past weekend. Covington was able to pull out of the shop and travel about 20 minutes to the famous local bullring known as the Creek Country Speedway for some ASCS Red River regional action. “I always enjoy racing at home and being able to see all my friends, fans, and family,” stated Matt.
Covington had trouble advancing from his 3rd row starting position in the heat. “We were just way too tight and got bounced around fighting the car, trying to make progress,” he says. “We fell back to the back at one point and spent most of the race trying to get as many spots back and things weren’t working (he finished fifth). We came in after the heat and were able to loosen the car and get everything better and transfer out of the B.”
Finishing 2nd in the B meant Covington would start 17th on the tight bullring for the main. “Starting back that far is dangerous,” says Matt. “We kind of had to take what we could get and we got clipped early in traffic which ripped one of the side boards down. It started to just lay over, flopping around and really hurt the performance of the car in the corners. That was hard to overcome especially on a bullring like that. Our luck continued to decline as I lost my power steering about halfway through the race. At that point I just hustled what I could and salvaged a top-10 bringing it home 9th. Not what I wanted and disappointing night, but hopefully we got the bad luck out of the way going forward.”
Matt was excited for the upcoming weekend and race down in Texas, but the race recently got canceled so the team has got tentative plans for Knoxville. “We were looking forward to going down to Texas and hanging with Jerry Graves and seeing if we couldn’t grab a regional win with coach,” he says. “But since that race was canceled, I am not 100% sure where we are going. It is looking like we will probably go to Knoxville for the season opener and then maybe by Sedalia on the way home. Still trying to figure it out, but just hope no matter where we go we can rebound past last weekend for a solid finish.”
