USAC’s Midwest Thunder Midget Championship opener at Montpelier (Ind.) Speedway fell to the elements last weekend, so the series now aims to debut at Montpelier on April 16.
The brand-new 27-race USAC IMRA Midget Championship begins this Saturday at 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa.
Last year, Aaron Schuck of Joliet, Ill. earned his second IMRA title and he and 2015 “Rookie of the Year” A.J. Johnson are expected to be among the top threats for the 2016 title.
USAC is no stranger to 34 Raceway, having conducted a half-dozen races there including Tommy Astone’s Midget victory in 1973. USAC Late Model races in 1987 and 1988 were won by Ken Essary and Willy Kraft, while Bryan Clauson (Midget) and Levi Jones (Sprint) captured the USAC “doubleheader” there in 2010. Dave Darland won USAC’s last race at Burlington, a Sprint race in 2013.
