Inside Line Promotions – CHICO, Calif. (April 4, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi capped last weekend with one of the best moments of his racing career.

Scelzi charged from 12th to record a career-best fourth-place result with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series on Saturday during the Mini Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway.

“I was so happy,” he said. “I felt so good from the time we unloaded. In qualifying what hurt us was going out early. The track got quite a bit faster. Then we were able to drive to fourth in the heat race when nobody was doing any passing.”

Scelzi, who qualified 18th quickest in his Roth Motorsports backed entry, advanced from sixth to fourth place in a heat race. That lined him up on the outside of the sixth row for the 40-lap main event.

“I could run the top,” he said. “I could run the bottom. I could cut across the race track. I never really ran the same laps. I was always searching around. I was looking for that place where nobody else was running. It seemed like we were bouncing around from seventh to 10th the whole race. We had a yellow at the end and that was big for me. That put us to sixth for the restart. We were able to capitalize on it and were able to end with an amazing finish.”

Scelzi took advantage of the late caution as he picked up two more positions on the restart to garner his first career top five with the World of Outlaws.

“We closed in on second and third, but just couldn’t get them at the end,” he said. “All in all, I’m so happy with how everything’s been going as we continue to progress each week.”

Scelzi kicked off last weekend on Friday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., for the Ocean Outlaw Showdown presented by Budweiser.

“It wasn’t a bad night,” he said. “We were in the second-to-last group in qualifying and the track had started to go away. Plus, I didn’t put the best laps down. In the heat I was able to make up for it, which put us in the main.”

Scelzi qualified 22nd quickest before he advanced from eighth to sixth place in a heat race to lock into the main event.

“For the first 20 laps everybody was on the bottom,” he said. “I was in 13th and I wanted to try something. I kept trying to make the top and middle work and unfortunately it didn’t. If I would have been patient I might have been able to get a top 10, but to me running 13th is like running 20th so I wanted to try to pass cars.”

He ended with a 20th-place result.

Scelzi returns to competition this Saturday and Sunday at Calistoga Speedway in Calistoga, Calif., for the Wine Country Outlaw Showdown with the World of Outlaws.
