Inside Line Promotions – WILLIS, Texas (April 3, 2016) – Ray Allen Kulhanek has decided he will compete for this season’s ASCS Gulf South Region championship.

Kulhanek, who has captured five titles and has ranked in the top two during the region’s final standings each of the past six years, is teaming up with Marvin and Peggy Pearson to help accomplish that feat in 2016.

“I’m teaming back up with the Pearson’s, who I won my first championship with in 2005,” he said. “They are towing me everywhere we are going to race this year and we’ll split some time and run their car a few races.”

Kulhanek is currently tied for third in the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings – only 40 points out of the lead – following a disappointing finish last Saturday at Gator Motorplex during the Nolan Wren Memorial.

“I wasn’t good in the heat at all,” he said. “I kinda got lucky. I started third and jumped right into second and just maintained.”

That earned him a spot in the feature redraw. Kulhanek pulled the No. 6 during the random draw to start on the outside of the third row for the 25-lap feature.

“Getting ready for the main we discussed my thoughts and bounced them off Marvin and my crew guys,” he said. “We decided to throw something at the car because I wasn’t happy with the way the car was working. We threw a few different things at it to tighten me up, but to try to keep the car still comfortable. We were super good. I drove up and took the lead around Lap 19 or so. From what I was told we were walking away from it.”

Unfortunately, a caution came out a couple of laps later to bunch the field together.

“We took back off on the restart and I made a driver error,” he said. “I went back up to the top and I should have slid myself or shut it down and run across the bottom. I left myself open and (Aaron) Reutzel came in and got a slider on me. We went to turns three and four and Scottie McDonald stuffed me in the fence coming out of turn four. It bent the drag link into the headers. When we went into turn one the car wasn’t steering. That ended my night right there. I tried to take back off, but I ran a lap and pulled in.”

Kulhanek was credited with a 14th-place result.

He is scheduled to return to competition this Friday and Saturday at Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, Miss., with the ASCS Gulf South Region. Kulhanek scored a fourth-place result at the track during his only visit, which came in July 2011.
