Competing against some of the best non-wing Micro racers in the country, Oklahoma racer Josh Marcham had a strong showing in the two night Spring Fling at Port City Raceway on March 25-26.
In the preliminary night heat, Josh drove quickly from an outside pole starting position to take the lead early on and not look back, finishing the heat nearly half a lap in front of the other competitors. This placed him starting fifth in the A-feature. During the feature, Josh quickly moved into 4th place, but the race surface limited advancement as the top four essentially played follow the leader on the bottom of the race track, resulting in a 4th place finish for Marcham, locking him into Saturday night’s A-main.
As Saturday night’s event began, a drawing resulted in the top 4 positions inverting, putting Marcham on the pole for the main event. With the racing surface allowing two lines on Saturday night, Marcham battled with the second place car for several laps; Marcham running the bottom and the competition on the top, swapping the lead for several laps. With only a few laps to go, the second place car was able to gain on Marcham enough to drop down in front of him, forcing Josh to take the outside line to compete. With the car better suited for the bottom, and lapped traffic competing for space, Josh dropped back to fourth when the checkered flag waived.
“It was a tough race, but a lot of fun. It’s the first race of the season, so we learned a lot about the car and the track,” Marcham said.
