Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz. hosts this Saturday’s “Easter Eggstravaganza” for the USAC Southwest Sprint cars, round two of the 2016 championship.
Bryan Clauson, by virtue of his victory at Las Vegas, Nev. March 4, leads the Southwest standings, but Stevie Sussex, who finished second at Las Vegas, has his sights set on the point lead with a top finish at Canyon.
Three-time Southwest champion R.J. Johnson will seek to add to his all-time career-leading total of 27 USAC Arizona victories, while Charles Davis Jr. hopes to add to his career total of 15. Johnson has won 14 times at Canyon. Davis owns five USAC victories there.
Troy Rutherford of Ojai, Calif. led all but one lap to win Saturday night’s 30-lap USAC West Coast Sprint race at Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway. Wheeling the AAA Propane Service/Trench Shoring Spike/Shark, he led the first 20 laps, yielded on lap 21 to Jace Vander Weerd, and then led the final nine laps to beat Vander Weerd, D.J. Johnson, series point leader Brody Roa and Trey Marcham.
The West Coast series resumes April 9 at the Merle Stone Chevrolet Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif. Brody Roa continues to lead the standings after his fourth-place finish Saturday.
