Inside Line Promotions – DU QUOIN, Ill. (March 21, 2016) – Chase Johnson is coming off a wild weekend as he raced two different types of race cars in two different time zones.

“It was a great experience and I’m very thankful to McClish Motorsports and Matt Wood Motorsports for the opportunities,” he said. “Everything didn’t go as planned, but we got a podium in one race and some great experience in the other.”

Last weekend began on Thursday at Delta Speedway in Stockton, Calif., where Johnson piloted an outlaw kart for McClish Motorsports. He qualified eighth quickest and finished second in a heat race to lock into the feature, which Johnson started on the outside of the fourth row.

“We showed up knowing that we were going to be a little behind as far as motor power because we had the 450cc on instead of the 500cc,” he said. “We wanted to make the best of what we had and that’s exactly what we did.

“On Lap 5 we had the top wing basically collapse down and forward. Instead of our normal wing position it went all the way down and all the way forward. It made for an ill-handling race car. A couple of laps after that we were involved in a big pileup and had to go to the rear.”

Johnson’s crew was able to fix the top wing during a mid-race red flag. Once Johnson restarted he methodically maneuvered through the field to garner a third-place result, which was his third top five of the season.

The weekend concluded on Saturday at the Southern Illinois Center for the Shamrock Classic with the USAC National Midget Series. Unfortunately, mechanical problems hampered the team throughout the night.

“On the first start during the heat race the engine didn’t go and was sputtering,” he said. “On the second one it took off, but the other guy starting on the front row got the better start because his motor was running. We were able to hold on to second, which was great.”

However, Johnson was unable to start the qualifier because of the problem. That relegated him toward the back of the B Main, which he was also unable to start because of a different mechanical problem.

“We were still trying to figure out the issue and we missed the qualifier,” he said. “We had everything fixed for the B Main, but when we went out it wouldn’t fire. It didn’t have any spark so we had another problem. There was no work area so we were done for the night.”

Johnson will return to winged sprint car competition this Wednesday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., where he will drive for Shawn and Cyndi Thomas during the Brad Sweet presents the Placerville Short Track Outlaw Showdown with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
