Brady Bacon – “Shamrock Classic” Brings Good Luck!
(Bill W) March 21, 2016 – It was a great start to the USAC National Midget Series schedule for Brady Bacon and the Frank Manafort #76 team wrenched by Brad Noffsinger last weekend in DuQuoin. The main event at the inaugural “Shamrock Classic” at the Southern Illinois Center would see the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver charge from 15th to fourth in the series’ opener. Brady will return to California this week and compete in Wednesday night’s World of Outlaws event at Placerville Speedway with the Josh Ford #73 team.
Brady would start inside row three of his heat race and advance to second. “The track was still pretty decent in our heat race,” he says. “We could still run around a little bit. We had a really good car there.”
He would also start fifth in his Qualifier. “Guys were just crashing, crashing, crashing, and we finally got caught up in one,” says Brady. “We had to go to the tail. We were trying to get back up through there and got caught in another one. We went to the back again and ended up sixth. We weren’t able to survive very well there.”
Brady would start fourth in the B main. “Luckily, we had enough points from the heat to start towards the front of the B,” he says. “We ended up running second.”
The B main finish set him up inside row eight of the main event. “We missed some of the stuff at the beginning,” says Brady. “It was a 50-lap race, which was pretty long. We settled in there at the beginning. Once some of the excitement went away, I think I was one of the first drivers to go to the top in turns three and four.”
It proved to be a great move for Brady. “We were able to pass some cars up there,” he says. “We were actually able to get up to third at one point in the race. The yellow came out, and we lost a spot on the restart. We were much better after running a couple laps than we were on the restarts.”
The hard-charger of the event put on a show, going from 15th to fourth. “It was a good start to the USAC season, being a points race,” says Brady. “A lot of people had a tough night. It was a good field…Bryan (Clauson), all the normal National guys, (Zach) Daum, Shane Cottle, (Thomas) Meseraull…it was hard to keep your nose clean there. Our car ran great and we had no problems, so we’re looking forward to our next race.”
