Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (March 14, 2016) – Trey Starks secured a top 20 last Saturday during the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event at Thunderbowl Raceway.

After Friday’s opening round was rained out, Starks kicked off Saturday at the fast track by qualifying 11th quickest in his group.

“It rained a ton on Friday,” he said. “For how much it had rained they had the track pretty good. It was hooked up and one lane, but at least it was smooth for Tulare. We drew a decent number, but people were going a lot faster the later they went out to qualify. We were a little off with the chassis, too. The time we put down wasn’t too bad considering we knew we left a lot on the table.”

Starks then finished seventh in a heat race, which relegated him to the Last Chance Showdown.

“We changed a few things for the heat,” he said. “We were in a transfer spot a couple of laps in and we had a restart. We ended up getting stuck on the inside and it was greasy on the bottom. The guys in front of me didn’t get a good start so I didn’t get a good start and we ended up losing a couple of spots.”

The start of the Last Chance Showdown was similar as Starks was quickly shuffled just outside of a transfer position. He maintained fifth throughout the consolation race and missed a transfer by only one position.

“We had some good speed, but the track conditions weren’t conducive for much passing unless somebody made a mistake,” he said. “We were getting stuff loaded up and Austen (Wheatley) came down and told us we were in because he had to scratch.”

Wheatley’s misfortune allowed Starks to start at the rear of the field as an alternate in the feature.

“In the main we started in the back and knew we needed to be careful,” he said. “We picked two spots off really quick on the start and it looked like we were rolling pretty good, but I knew the leader would hit traffic really soon because the leader’s lap times would be good compared to us in the back.”

Within the first handful of laps Starks was caught by the leader and put a lap down.

“After that I tried to hold my line because I knew they’d be racing hard behind me,” he said. “It’s tough because you get put in the mix of being put down a lap early. You don’t want to mess up a race for someone competing for the win. On a positive note we stayed out of trouble and rolled it into the trailer.”

Starks finished with a 20th-place result.

He is scheduled to compete this Friday and Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., for the FVP Western Spring Shootout with the World of Outlaws.
