Covington Motorsports- Glenpool, Ok. (March 1, 2016) Matt Covington and the Covington Motorsports team came home with a strong 2nd place effort to kick off the 2016 season last Saturday night.
Covington powered his T&L Foundry/ Triple X chassis to a 2nd place finish during the USCS National Series event at Magnolia Motor Speedway on Saturday night.
“It was a good night for us,” Covington said, “I was anxious to get back at it and knock the rust off after a busy winter. I had planned to already be racing sooner, but we got a new trailer this winter and had a delay getting it done and all setup for the upcoming season. But to come out here and have the speed we did along with the finish we had was a good way to start the year.”
Matt was able to start the night out strong and grab some passing points in the heat, rallying from 5th to 2nd.
Covington advanced to the redraw after the heat effort. Matt found himself starting the feature from the outside of the third row after drawing the “six” pill in the redraw.
“I knew we were going to have our work cut out for us after the redraw,” stated Matt. “There were some good cars ahead of me and this was the first feature action I had seen in a few months because of the offseason.”
Matt went to work once the green flag waved and worked his way forward into the top-3 by midway. Covington had some challenges advancing, trying to fight for spots and real estate as him and the rest of the top-5, other than the leader, were neck and neck on the bottom. Matt kept fighting and was eventually able to wheel his A-Rock Materials/Wesmar powered machine into 2nd in the closing laps. Once Covington got into 2nd he struggled to find the extra bit of speed needed to mount a charge on the leader and ultimately settled for the runner-up spot.
“The track was tricky in the feature,” he said. “We were set up best to run the bottom, but honestly so was everybody else besides the leader and we had to fight and claw our way up towards the front after starting 6th. We were pretty good and had a fast car but just a tad bit off Bergman once we got into second. But to start 6th and finish 2nd on our first night out this season is something we can build on and I am pretty happy with it. Honestly, we just need to continue to stay upfront and be consistent the next few races. If we can do that, then we should have a shot at picking up a few wins and starting out the season strong.”
