PETERSEN MEDIA: Kicking the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series annual Spring Break trip out West off in Texas over the weekend, Paul McMahan earned Hard Charger honors on Friday night at the Cotton Bowl Speedway before having a tough go at the Royal Purple Raceway on Saturday night.

“We are making gains each night I feel, but were not gaining on it as fast as we would like,” McMahan said. “The guys are working hard night in and night out, so hopefully we can be rewarded for our efforts during the rest of our trip out West.”

Taking part in the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series first visit at the Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, TX on Friday night, McMahan timed the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Benic Enterprises No. 7 machine in 16th fastest during qualifying time trials, putting him in the second row of his heat race.

Having a tough time in his heat, the Nashville, TN driver would lose some track position as a seventh place finish in his heat would force him into the night’s Last Chance Showdown.

Taking the green flag from the front row of the Semi, McMahan and Kraig Kinser would duel for the top-spot with McMahan finishing in the second spot, earning him the 22nd starting spot for the A Main.

From the back of the pack, McMahan was able to make up ground aboard the Rick Rogers Construction/Maxim Chassis/Boss Signs and Graphics entry. Working his way toward the Top-10, McMahan would be the KSE Hard Charger on Friday night by way of his 12th place finish.

The Royal Purple Raceway would be the scene on Saturday night, and an unusual turn of events would force series officials to line heat races up by time trial pill draw, as there were issues with the timing and scoring system.

Lining up third in the second heat race, ‘Pauls to the Wall’ would battle with Bryan Clauson for the final position in the Dash, but would finish third and line up in the fifth row for the 40-lap A Main event.

The main event would see McMahan fight his machine as he could not get moving forward. Racing with the likes of Aaron Reutzel and Jason Sides during the A, McMahan would battle within the Top-10 until falling back to the 13th spot when the checkered flag flew.

“We got off to a slow start on Friday night, and we got it a lot better in the feature,” McMahan said. “Saturday we just tightened up too much and could not get moving forward. Rick and Barb Rogers do a lot for this team, so we will keep working at it and get this car up front very soon.”
