Indianapolis 500 veteran Bob Harkey died Saturday in Indianapolis, Ind. at the age of 85. A frequent USAC Championship, Sprint and Midget competitor, he recorded a USAC feature victory on August 23, 1963 at Wall Stadium in Belmar, N.J. driving for car owner Ed Stone. The 1958 United Midget Racing Club (UMRC) Champion, Harkey was a six-time starter in the Indianapolis 500, recording eighth-place finishes in 1964 and 1974. An accomplished pilot, he also appeared as a stunt driver in a couple of famous auto racing movies and was known for his signature gold helmet. Visitation has been set for 5-8 pm Friday at Conkle Funeral Home, 4925 W. 16th Street, Speedway, IN 46224. The service is 11:30 am Saturday.
