Inside Line Promotions – SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 12, 2016) – Trey Starks saved his best performance for the final race of the 2nd annual Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown.
Starks scored his first top-10 finish of the season last Saturday at Cocopah Speedway to cap the five-race marquee event.
“It was great to end things on a high note,” he said. “We didn’t draw well the entire event and we never could climb out of that hole. Sometimes that’s just how racing goes so you have to keep putting one foot in front of another and stay positive. Our team did that and we ended with a good result.”
Starks opened the night finishing fourth in a heat race before he won a qualifier.
“The car felt the best that it felt all week in the qualifier,” he said. “We were really, really good. We jumped to the lead on the start and the car did everything it was supposed to do.”
That locked Starks into the sixth starting position for the 30-lap feature.
“The track was really tricky again,” he said. “There were a couple of close calls at the start, which cost me a couple of positions. I spent most of the race running eighth before Shane Stewart got me with about five laps to go. It was really good to get to run up with those guys and see how our car acted. We finished the week with a top 10. As frustrating as the week was going it left a little better taste in our mouth.”
The ninth-place result was a big jump from how the week started last Wednesday when Starks placed ninth in both a heat race and a qualifier. The team elected not to start the B Main on the fast and rough track.
“We weren’t good in the heat or the qualifier,” he said. “The track was tough to pass on, especially for us. It just looked like a good opportunity to tear some stuff up and if nothing else to put wear and tear on our car. We looked at it and thought it’d be in our best interest to save our equipment.”
The team showed improvement on Friday as Starks advanced from seventh to fifth place in a heat race, finished fourth in a qualifier and placed third in a B Main to transfer into the main event.
“We needed some laps,” he said. “I wanted to see how the car was going to be on a track like that. We got a few cars throughout the race. Toward the end it got to be follow the leader, but we ended up moving up a few spots and learned more about the car.”
Starks posted an 18th-place result.
He is slated to return to competition March 3-4 at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas in Las Vegas with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.
