Inside Line Promotions – SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 5, 2016) – Trey Starks nearly overcame a high pill draw during the first two nights of the 2nd annual Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown last weekend at Cocopah Speedway.

Starks started on the fourth row of a heat race each night at the 3/8-mile oval, where 45 other competitors from across the country vied for the $12,000 top prize.

“We didn’t draw well either night, but we almost overcame it each time,” he said. “That’s one of the things I love about this format. You aren’t completely doomed by a bad draw.”

Starks rallied from eighth to fifth place during his heat race on Friday. He then placed fifth in a qualifier, which lined him up on the outside of the front row for a 15-lap B Main.

“We got going there fairly well and I felt like I was good enough to earn a transfer into the main event, but we had a mechanical issue late in the race,” he said.

Starks was in one of the four transfer spots when he was forced to the infield on Lap 11 to end his night early.

The weekend concluded on Saturday with Starks placing eighth in a heat race and ninth in a qualifier. That lined him up at the back of a B Main, which once again transferred the top four to the main event.

“We took off like a rocket early and I worked my way through half the field,” he said. “It got a lot tougher once I was close to a transfer position. Toward the end I had to change my line to try something to get a couple more spots, but we just came up short.”

Starks rallied from 14th to seventh before he lost a position in the closing laps. His six passed cars were the most of any driver in the consolation race.

The Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown resumes on Wednesday before the event wraps up on Friday and Saturday.
