Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. is the 2015 champion of the Mike Curb Super License. It’s his first overall championship in the standings determined by total points earned from all three of USAC’s National Championship series.
Darland’s ninth-place finish in Thursday night’s “Turkey Night Grand Prix” Midget finale at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway was enough to withstand Kevin Thomas Jr.’s challenge on the final night of the season. Thomas finished 10 points behind Darland in the final standings.
A $5,000 check awaits Darland, courtesy of the award sponsor and presenter Mike Curb, at USAC’s National Awards Dinner December 11 in downtown Indianapolis as recognition of his accomplishment.
A total of 95 drivers earned National Championship points during the season. Tracy Hines ranked third in the final Super License standings ahead of Brady Bacon and Robert Ballou.
Darland’s margin of victory is not the smallest ever. In 2008 Hines edged Levi Jones by just three points!
Previous winners of the “Super License Award” include Hines (2000, 2008, 2013 and 2014); Bryan Clauson (2010, 2011 and 2012), Cole Whitt (2009), Jerry Coons Jr. (2007), Josh Wise (2005 and 2006), Jay Drake (2004) and J.J. Yeley (2001-02-03).
